About Te Omanga Hospice

• Since 1979, Te Omanga Hospice has provided specialist palliative care services free of charge for those living with a terminal or life-limiting illness in the Hutt Valley community.

• Palliative care improves the quality of life of patients and that of their families who are facing challenges associated with life-threatening illness, whether physical, psychological, social or spiritual. The quality of life of caregivers improves as well.

• Te Omanga Hospice provides specialist palliative care through a multidisciplinary team of specialist doctors, nurses, therapists, cultural and spiritual carers, and specially trained  volunteers to those living with a terminal or life-limiting illness in the Hutt Valley.

• We support the delivery of palliative care in Aged Residential Care facilities, the Hutt Hospital and in conjunction with general practitioners. We also provide specialist consultancy services to the Wairarapa Palliative Care Service.

• Every year, we need to raise 50% of our annual funding needs, this year $6.5 million, from our local community, with the balance being provided through Te Whatu Ora Wairarapa and Te Whatu Ora Hutt Valley. Te Omanga Hospice exists because of the kindness, generosity and understanding of individuals and organisations in the community we serve.

Te Omanga Hospice Services

• Our Community Palliative Care team make it possible for patients with specialist
palliative care needs to be cared for at home where they often feel most comfortable.

• For patients under the hospice programme who require a level of assessment and
symptom control that cannot be managed at home, our Inpatient Unit (IPU) service is
available.

• We provide emotional, spiritual, cultural, social and psychological support through our
Family Support team.

• Our Aged Residential Care team supports patients, their whānau and their care staff, in
rest homes and hospital level care facilities in the Hutt Valley.

In the year ending 30 June 2024:

• 1 in 3 people who died in the Hutt Valley were supported by Te Omanga Hospice
• 35% of people we cared for had a non-cancer diagnosis
• We cared for 660 patients and their whānau
• There were 143 admissions to our Inpatient Unit
• Our clinical team made 6,553 visits to patients in the community
• We provided advice and support to help 138 patients in Aged Residential Care facilities
• We provided consultation and advice to support 428 patients at the Hutt Hospital
• Our Family Support team made 702 visits to patients in their own home
• 161 patients and their whānau received Art Therapy and Music Therapy
• Our youngest patient was 9 years old, and our oldest patient was 105 years old.
